The student as consumer, client or co-producer? / Martina Vukasovic

Massification of higher education as well as reforms inspired by new public management ideas are changing the way how students are seen by academic staff, institutional leaders, governments, as well as by students themselves. Students can be seen as consumers, clients, co-producers, but also apprentices, pawns, cash-cows, etc. The lecture will provide an overview of the different perspectives on students and reflect on (a) their origins and ideological underpinnings, (b) the relation to academic disciplines and different types of higher education stakeholders, and (c) the implications for teaching, learning, governance and funding of higher education.

Lecturer: Martina Vukasović (Department of Sociology, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Ghent University)
